Personal Trainer, Personal Benefits

by Frank Benjamin

When my friend and I began our own “Biggest Loser” contest, I was either working out at home or in the fitness center at hotel while on the road.  Most of the time the hotel fitness center barely had enough equipment to perform a quality workout.

When I was home, it was convenient to workout at home.  I already had an exercise bike and Bowflex.  It gave me a reason to use them properly and not for hanging clothes on them.

After the contest was over, I kept performing my workout at home.   But the workout became boring and I was limited with what I could do.

Don’t get me wrong; I really enjoyed using the Bowflex.  It truly is a nice compact piece of equipment.   But after performing the same exercises for almost the same year, I hit a plateau, I became bored and I   started to lose motivation.  That is when I decided to visited a gym close to by.

After negotiating a better monthly membership price, I asked about a personal trainer.  I have belonged to gyms before and knew my way around the equipment, but really thought a personal trainer could take my workout to a new level.

I learned that day how difficult a training session could be.  I was told how their trainers not only have you perform traditional exercises, but they think outside the box and introduce you to other exercises that you might not have ever thought of trying.  Many times these exercises are more difficult than the tradition exercises and required no weights.

The trainer manager that I met with offered me a free workout.  That day I learned how much a personal trainer could help, and how much my body was out of shape.  After a leg workout that only consisted of a weighted vest, I was worn out more than any workout that I ever performed on my own.  This was exactly what I was looking for and signed on the dotted line for a year’s worth of training sessions.

Throughout the last year I have learned so much from my personal trainers.  A personal trainer does more than have you perform certain exercises and count the reps.  The trainers that I have had the opportunity to work with are an encyclopedia of fitness knowledge and taught me more than about each exercise that they had me performing than I could ever have learned on my own.

You don’t have to workout with a personal trainer every time you go to the gym to take your fitness plan to the next level.  The following is a list of what a personal trainer has done for me.

  1. Motivation – There were many times when I was performing a certain maneuver, felt spent and ready to rest when my trainer pushed and motivated me to dig deep finish a few more reps.  That has translated to me pushing myself hard while working out on my own.
  2.

  3. Correct form and focus – A personal trainer not only counts your reps and motivates.  They are experts and teach proper form to maximum muscle use and convey what muscles you should be focusing on while performing the exercise.  Bad form can be from using too much weight or just plain ignorance.  My personal trainers have made me focus on my form and the muscles that I am trying to strengthen.
  4.

  5. Variation is the spice of life – Our bodies are made to compensate for repetition.  This often leads to plateaus in your workout.  Probably everyone that has worked out has hit a plateau in their time.  Plateaus are frustrating and the lack of results can threaten your resolve and motivation.  A personal trainer will make sure that you are changing your workout up enough to limit those plateaus.  It is suggested that you change your workout every 3-6 months.  A good trainer seems to have a endless well of exercise for your workout.
  6.

  7.  Mind Frame – Since I have scheduled appointments with my trainer, I have a certain mind frame when I am heading to the gym for a training session.  This is also a reason why I stopped working out at home.  Getting in my car and heading to the gym is different than heading down the hallway into a room in a house or apartment.
