A trio of passionate community leaders are among the women to be highlighted at the 28th annual ĢƵ Foundation Women’s Council Celebration Luncheon.
The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, in the Morris Lawrence Building on the Washtenaw Community College campus.
Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit the ĢƵ Foundation's Student Emergency Fund, which helps ĢƵ students meet unanticipated expenses that may jeopardize their ability to stay in school.
The luncheon will honor three influential “Sheroes,” or female heroes who demonstrate professional excellence through their work and service to support the underserved within our community. .
A total of 86 women and one women-led organization have been honored since the inception of the Women’s Council Sheroes program in 1997.
The 2025 honorees include:
Debby Mitchell Covington, D.Min.
Dr. Covington is the Strategic Partnerships and Equity Initiatives Director at the University of Michigan College of Engineering.
She founded VestedIn U, LLC, a coaching and consulting firm, and All Things Artistic Ministries, Inc. (ATAMI), a faith-based arts education organization that uplifts youth through creative expression. She also serves as Board Chair for the African American Cultural and Historical Museum. In 2024, Covington was appointed to the Washtenaw County Historic District Commission. She holds degrees from Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Ashland Theological Seminary.
Mildred Hayman Johnson. Ph.D.
Dr. Johnson has earned multiple degrees from the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University and Destiny Christian University of Florida. After a successful career in financial services, where she held multiple leadership roles and business licenses, Johnson shifted her focus to community impact.
She leads the nonprofit Empowering Services, which supports incarcerated individuals as they prepare to reenter society. Every Sunday, Empowering Services ministers to women in the Washtenaw County Jail through the Her Turn program, helping them find strength and a path forward.
Eileen Thacker
Thacker holds a master’s degree in Education from Indiana University and a master’s in Social Work from Loyola University.
She is an active leader in Washtenaw County, pouring into Hadassah, ORT, University Musical Society, Girls Group, ĢƵ Women’s Council, Ele’s Place and Jewish Family Services. A natural “connector,” she loves bringing people and organizations together to build lasting partnerships.
